It’s A Gringo Thanksgiving Charlie Brown

So it looks like we are going to be hosting at least six other North American missionaries for Thanksgiving…and maybe more. We figured it was a good way to reach out to other US citizens that are here in La Ceiba. We are thrilled about the opportunity.

We want to try to give them all a little touch of home. Unfortunately, we can’t find all the things we need for a “traditional American Thanksgiving” here in Honduras…go figure.

So, this is where you come in…do you want to help us make Thanksgiving 2008 special for a bunch of missionaries here in La Ceiba, Honduras?

If this is appealing to you please pick one or two of items from this list:

french fried onion rings (the kind you put in green bean casserole)
cream of chicken
corn prong thingies - you know - to pick up hot corn on the cob
pie plate - tin - have one, need more
can of sweet potatoes
all spice
packages of gravy mix
canned cranberry sauce
canned pumpkin
candy thermometer

…and mail them to:

Mike & Erin Pettengill
PO Box 1090
La Ceiba, Atlantida
Honduras, Central America

Please send these items out sooner rather then later, as the mail is VERY slow. Thank you!

So, the other day for my Advanced ESL class the students did a project where they researched any Holiday celebrated in an English-speaking country. One girl in particular did Thanksgiving and she went into detail about the food. Dude, i was DYING! I want that stuff SO BAD! The food here is pretty bland. Not spicy, little salt, NO pepper.....I MISS FOOOOOOOOOD! And your blog is NOT helping! Dang it! But, I still love you and you should know that you might be hosting SEVEN US missionaries in November! LOL

We had a huge thanksgiving party one year, and invited all the expats in our city. There were thirty or so of us. And our doorbell broke on our gate, so one lady who came late finally gave up on us hearing her banging with all the noise in the house and climbed the 8 foot gate to get it! And she was in her 50's.

What a fun night it was!

Gravy and cream of chicken soup is actually really easy to make from scratch, you know. Start off with some butter heated a little in a pan until it is bubbly, and then slowly add a tablespoon or two of flour, then even more slowly, add in some milk (or if you like your gravy brown, water) and the right bullion. That is the base of any cream soup or gravy. My aunt taught me that once, and I tend to use it more than I get ready made... could be also that some ready made foods make my tummy cramp up.
